Moving to Austria

The largest sectors in Austria are trade, transport and storage, as well as accommodation and gastronomy. However, qualified personnel are also constantly being sought in the research and development sector. If you find a job and would like to move to Austria as an expat, you should consider a few things.

Entry from EU/EEA

As a citizen of a member state of the European Economic Area (including all members of the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland), you need the following documents if you decide to go to Austria in the long term:

  • Birth certificate
  • Passport
  • Residence Registration Form

Business travellers and expats who stay in Austria for more than three months and require a registration certificate must report to the authorities within 4 months of their arrival. The registration form can be downloaded from the official government website of Austria and must be completed and signed by the landlord. If you rent a furnished apartment from Homelike for your stay in Austria, you can indicate your address on the registration form. After 5 years of continuous residence in Austria, one can apply for a certificate of permanent residence.

Entry from non-member countries

Every business traveller or expatriate who is not a citizen of the EU, the EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) or Switzerland and would like to stay longer than 6 months in Austria requires a residence permit. The various residence permits can be looked up on Austria’s official government website and applied for as required.

Accommodation is best arranged before entering Austria. A furnished apartment from Homelike is ideal for this, as it can easily be booked online and used as a residence for your stay in Austria.
