Registering an apartment in Hamburg
General
If you are staying in a Hamburg apartment or you are visiting the Hansestadt for more than six months, you must register with the local resident office. Unless you are moving from abroad, this can also be done by an authorized person. The registration costs 12 € per person or 12 € per family, if applicable. Whether you register the apartment as a main or secondary residence will depend on where you spend most of your time. If you live in a job-oriented commuter apartment in Hamburg, it must be assumed that you are staying there for the most part of the week. As an exception, if you are married, the apartment or house where your spouse is living will be considered the main residence.
Deadlines
In general, it is required to register within two weeks after arrival. The Hamburger residence office recommends an appointment. In this case, it is sufficient if the appointment was made within the two week deadline, but takes place at a later date.

- When registering for children from the age of 16: From the age of 16, young people can register themselves without the parents’ written consent.
- In the case of married couples: the original marriage certificate; Registration by one of the spouses is sufficient (exception: immigration from abroad)
- In the case of divorced persons: original copy of the certificate of divorce
- In case of widowed: Death certificate of the deceased partner
- For owner of a car: If Hamburg becomes your main address, you have to change the registration of your car at the national traffic office
- Rental agreement signed by the landlord
- Registration form or form for registering multiple apartmetns
Second home tax
Hamburg levies a second residence tax of 8% of net cold rent. Upon registration, you must complete this declaration on the second home tax form and submit it to the tax authorities. If the rent is paid by your company, the tax will be calculated on the basis of the current rent level. Further information can be found here.
