Popular neighbourhoods in Hamburg

Hamburg is not only the second largest city in Germany, but also one of the most diverse. Depending on age group and family status, the districts are in demand with different target groups. If you are looking for a temporary apartment in Hamburg, you will find information about the districts of Altona, Sternschanze, St. Pauli and Uhlenhorst.

Living centrally in Hamburg Altona

Hamburg Altona has a very special position in the Hansestadt. Up until 1938, the district was independent, which is still clear in the character and building development. Thus, the city quarter can be further subdivided into Altona-Nord and Altona-Altstadt. While in the north you are more likely to find new buildings with a view of the Elbe, Jugendstil buildings and mansions from the early periods characterize the streets of the old town. This diversity of properties is also reflected in the rental prices from high-priced estates to cheap and charming apartments. If you decide to rent an apartment in Altona, you will be living very centrally. Thanks to the local train station Hamburg Altona, the district is well connected to both local and long-distance transport within Germany and other European countries.

Hamburgs Schanzenviertel

If you get an apartment in Hamburg Schanzenviertel, you couldn’t live more centrally. The Schanzenviertel is directly adjacent to St. Pauli and within a few minutes you can reach the city center by bus or train. The railway station connects the district with both local and long-distance transport. This, along with many classic-style buildings with comparatively cheap rent, makes the district particularly popular with young people. Due to the influx of students and young professionals, the Hamburg Schanzenviertel developed more and more as a popular nightlife area besides the Reeperbahn. It’s equally possible here to spend evenings outside at a pub or bar, while also enjoying the sun in one of the parks or green areas during spring and summer.

Hamburgs district St. Pauli

St. Pauli is probably most well-known for the Reeperbahn and its traditional football club. But this district has a lot more to offer. Only a ten-minute walk from the nightlife district, the harbor is the second major tourist attraction with small and large ships for cruises. Moreover, the tallest building in Hamburg is located in St. Pauli. The Heinrich Hertz Tower, 279.20 meters high, is located right next to the trade fair grounds, which also belongs to Pauli. Less known is that parts of the large parks Planten and Blomen, with the Parksee, Rosengarten and Japanese garden, extends to St. Pauli. Nevertheless, the wide selection of nightclubs, pubs, theaters, cabaret and changing events is characteristic of this alternative district.

As one of the largest traffic junctions in Germany, Hamburg has an extraordinarily well-developed infrastructure. Its main train station connects Hamburg to the rest of Europe, and to the world via Hamburg’s international airport. The marina is also responsible for long-distance traffic, both industrial and touristic.

Connections within the city

Within the city, traffic is well distributed. The public transport companies in Hamburg connect the entire city. Nevertheless, public transportation plays rather small role in the Hamburg streets, with only 18% of trips being made on public busses and trams. In comparison, 42% of residents choose to commute by car.

On-the-go by bike or by food

Hamburgers also enjoy traveling by foot. There are numerous trails along the water or through the city. However, if you prefer to commute by bike, you can use the approx. 1,700 kilometers of cycling trails in Hamburg, which are a great excuse to explore the city. For this purpose, several BikeSharing services (e.g., http://stadtrad.hamburg.de) offer uncomplicated rental bikes at fair prices.

Outdoor activities

As the greenest city in Germany, Hamburg has countless parks, green areas, plus hiking and walking trails. Especially on the inviting promenades along the Alster and the Elbe rivers, you will find jogging tours and sporting activities. There are also numerous large events in the Hanseatic city. One is the annual harbor festival, which celebrates the birthday of the harbor and features various attractions on land and water.

Discover Hamburg

The city of Hamburg has been a leader in trade and industry through history. Testimonies of this time, like the old Speicherstadt and the Kontorenviertel, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, are absolutely worth seeing. Also an architectural highlight is the Hafencity, the largest urban development project in Europe, in which modern residential and office buildings have sprung up in the old harbor area. The Elbphilharmonie, which was officially opened after a long construction period in January 2017, is an absolute architectural masterpiece. In addition to the concert hall, it also offers apartments and a hotel. In addition, the Plaza is located at a height of 37 metres and offers a panoramic view of the city open to the public.
There is something unconventional yet relaxing about St. Pauli. In addition to the Reeperbahn and the party mile, the harbor and landing bridges are also worth a visit during the day.

From musicals to classical concerts

The Elbphilharmonie, also known as “Elphi”, is an architectural masterpiece and places Hamburg as a top German city for music. It was created as a new landmark for the city and a “cultural monument for all”.
In addition to classical music, Hamburg is also known for its musicals. The Theater im Hafen is home to the worldwide success “The Lion King,” the longest running musical in German history.
There are also numerous theaters in various disciplines in Hamburg. In addition to the renowned city and state theater, there are many independent houses. The Deutsches Schauspielhaus, Hamburg is not only the largest theater in Germany, but also one of the most famous independent production houses along with the Kampnagel.

Museum and gallery

Those interest in art shouldn’t miss the larger museums such as the Kunsthalle or the Deichtorhallen. Also worth a visit are the smaller art galleries or spaces: URBAN Kunst displays Streetart and Only Art Club shows contemporary art by young artists. All houses in the Gängeviertel are designed as works of art. This is a successful example of art in public spaces which is accessible year round, free of charge, and accessible to everyone.
